The iconic Ghostbusters firehouse HQ was faithfully recreated in LEGO for this mega-sized 4634 piece set. As well as the red bricked building, the set comes with detailed interior and 9 minifigures: the 4 Ghostbusters (Peter Venkman, Raymond Stantz, Egon Spengler and Winston Zeddemore) as well as receptionist Janine Melnitz, and Peter's neighbours Dana Barrett and Louis Tully. Spook-wise there's a Zombie Driver and the Library Ghost; as well as Slimer and two other flouresent ghosts.

The firehouse features a hinge which allows creators to look/play inside and provides just enough room for the ECTO-1 (sold separately) to fit.

It's still available to purchase on the LEGO Store and at selected retailers for US $349.99 / £284.99 / 389.99€, but expect it to retire very soon.

The first of two London builds on the list, this set shows off London's most iconic bridge complete with a working drawbridge. The final build is over 40 inches (101cm) long and 17 inches (43cm) high, so expect it to take some serious shelf space - though the set can be taken apart in modules for transportation.

The bridge wouldn't be complete without some vehicles to drive across it, so this set comes with a black London taxi, red double-decker bus, green car and, er, an iconic yellow truck.

Tower Bridge can be purchased for US$239.99 / £219.99 / 219.99€ on the LEGO online shop and limited retail stores. As one of the longest selling sets, the chances are this will go in to retirement soon so pick it up while you still can!

The first Death Star on our list is the most recent one released from the LEGO Group. Essentially a re-release of 10188 (#18 on our list), the 2016 revision of the Death Star has a few new additions which increase the brick total by just 87 bricks.

The newer set includes Darth Vader's TIE Advanced Fighter which has been updated with more pieces and more details have been added throughout the set. It also comes with updated minifigures using the latest printing techniques, and boast the record for the LEGO set with the most number of minifigures.

Finally on our list of the 25 biggest LEGO sets is the beautiful Star Wars Sandcrawler.

Recreating the early scene from Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope the Jawas’ desert-going vehicle, the Sandcrawler, is an impressive 3296 pieces.

It comes with steering, ramps, 2 working cranes, liftable side panels and a speeder bike for extra exploration. As well as 7 minifigures, it comes with 7 droids to make for an impressive marketplace. There’s R2-D2 and C-3PO, together with an R1-series Droid, another R2 unit, R5-D4, a Treadwell Droid and Gonk Droid.

The Sandcrawler set originally went for US $299.99 / £249.99 / 299.99€ and even though it has retired if you shop carefully on auction sites you can pick this set up for not too much of a premium.

Although it debuted at number 15 on our list, LEGO have been pushing out larger sets over the last few years which means this now lands at number 29.

With the Grand Carousel, LEGO bought the fun of the fair to the home. This beautifully decorated merry-go-round included a motor and sound brick which allowed the carousel to rotate and play music. The swing boats and horses moved up and down as the carousel rotated. With a heap of impressive details on the carousel and a canvas texture roof, this set would look incredible in any collectors' display. When released back in 2009 it was yours for just $249.99 / £179.99, but now it'll fetch a price closer to $1k.

Although this set is no longer available, a slightly smaller carousel weighing in at 2640 pieces has been released - but it'll require additional effort and cost to motorize.

Technically, the Ultimate Battle for CHIMA is the largest LEGO set ever created - but it was never sold commercially. The set was given away as the grand prize for a Legends of Chima competition in the July 2015 issue of LEGO Club Magazine and a smaller LEGO City set containing 5268 pieces was given away shortly afterward. These sets contained lots of smaller pre-existing sets, so it's still possible to gain the same collection commercially - just without the big box.
